The Neolithic settlement of Pyrgos‑Agia Marina

This paper is a preliminary presentation of the large settlement which has been just recently discovered at Pyrgos-Agia Marina, thanks to intensive field survey, geophysical prospections and HD documentation sections left behind by mechanical terracing for construction works. The discovery larger section other remains indicates presence an early, long-lived, nucleated on west bank Pyrgos river. early deposits are very rich in cultural materials, particularly chipped stones groundstones grinding cereals. Occupation midden present quite abundant faunal belonging different species. A complete absence pottery interesting, suggesting that stratified may fall entirely within Pre-Pottery phase Cypriot Neolithic. Small-scale geoarchaeological mapping area revealed Neolithic buildings were constructed slope (fan) few meters above ancient riverbed. set archaeological samples radiocarbon dating was collected between 2020 2022 dated through Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (AMS); most dates obtained from two can be placed 7547 cal BC 6368 BC. archaeobotanical archaeozoological studies moment still progress they both need further sampling analyses clearer interpretation, but results already interesting. study lithics Agia Marina undertaken situ objects unstratified recovered base sections.
